How Mata Jivdani granted Moksha to a cow herder

A pious herder of cows once sought a Shankaracharya’s instructions on how he could achieve moksha. The Shankaracharya answered that his selfless devotion to Gau Mata would attract the grace of his Kuladevi who would grant him moksha.

The herder followed the instructions and one day he noticed that there was a cow in his herd whose owner was unknown to him. After sunset the cow started walking home and the herder followed him uphill till he stopped before a very beautiful woman bedecked in gold who had a resplendent smile. She was the Devi herself.

The herder asked the Goddess that he be given his wages for herding her cow. He explained that in this world he was considered an untouchable and everything he touched was considered to be soiled. He therefore wanted a gift that could not be soiled.

The Devi smiled and granted the herder the ultimate Jeev Dhana – Moksha.

Jivdani Temple is on a mountain in Virar a suburb of Mumbai and it is visited by thousands of devotees.
