Lost
in the mists of time is a story of how Sri Mumbadevi, or 'Maha Ambe
Aai' the Nagar Devi or the patron of the Patron Goddess of Mumbai, the
commercial capital of India, manifested herself in Mumbai.
An asura name
Mumbarka had so terrorized the poor residents of Mumbai that they prayed
to Lord Brahma and asked him to liberate them from the excesses of
Mumbarkasur. Lord Brahma than invoked the Goddess Mahaamba and from Lord
Brahma's body manifested Mumbadevi who was armed with celestial wepons
and whose face shone with a divine light.
When Mumba Devi
appeared, Mumbarkasur fell at her feet and sought her forgiveness. He
also requested her to assume his name. Mumba Devi agreed to do so and
that is how she got her name. A grateful Mumbarkasur built a temple to
the goddess, where she has been worshiped since ancient times by the
Agris, Kolis and other original inhabitants of the island since
time immemorial.
